Wheel + Swing Arm Mod

FZ-16/FZ-S Wheel + Swing Arm for R15

So, This part of the modd deals with replacing the R15's wheels with the ones of FZ-16.

P.S. : The wheels and the Swing arm for an FZ WOULD NOT BE a direct fit for the R15 and has to be customized accordingly.
The cons of this modd would be:
  • The height of the bike would increase tremendously (short people please don't go for this modd as your feet wouldn't touch the ground).
  • FZ-16 has no Rear Disc brake. This implies the wheel rim has no disc and the swing arm doesn't consist of the disc brake pad assembly.
  • FZ-16 has a basic mono shock while R15 has a linked type mono shock (advanced).
  • Reduced mileage and handling.
The pros of this modd is:
  • Fatter rims and wheels and a better looking swing arm + hugger.
  • No other pros - This is just a waste of time if you have lots of time to waste. The whole customisation is just for the bike to look better.

If you ever wondered what would be the cost of all the parts, the approx is as follows :
FZ16 Rear Rim + the tyre = 5K
FZ16 Swing arm = 2K
FZ16 Shocks = 2.5K
FZ16 Front Rim + the tyre = 3K

Pictures of Few parts I bought...
  • FZ-16 Swing arm + Mono shocks (spring)
  • Bought a silencer/muffler/exhaust pipe which i will fix under the seat. This silencer has a nozzle to toggle between free flow (loud sound) and the normal flow (no sound).
  • Front Twin Disc - Bought a Disc and calliper to act as twin discs
  • A longer Chain ( FZ Chain), FZ Sprocket Holder, Front+Back Bearings, Front+Back Axel, Chain Adjusters
  • Front Wheel Odometer Plug for FZ
  • Pirelli Diablo Z  160/60/17. Wont be buying an FZ's front tyre as the current rear tyre of the R15 is the same size as the front one of FZ but a little fatter.
If you ever need imported fat tyres like Dunlop, Pirelli, (& lots more) for a cheaper price.

Methods:

Wheels  : (Has to be done professionally using a CNC Welding Machine)
  • Front Wheel - The front wheel cast/rim of FZ is broader at the center where the axle sits. R15 does not have boader telescopic shocks and hence it would be impossible for an FZ front rim to fit in between the telescopic shock absorbers. Since this modd involves Front Twin Disc brake assembly, the following has to be done. The right side of the Original R15 front wheel cast is cut at the center along the axis in order to slice out the whole side that holds the disc brake. The FZ front rim is sliced similarly on the left side along the axis. Now the Right side of the R15 front rim is welded on to the Left side of the FZ rim hence making it thinner at the center than before and now the result would have both the sides with the provision for disc brakes and a perfect fit into the thinner telescopic shocks of R15. The photo shows the front wheel with twin discs. If you dint notice, the silver part on the rim is the original R15's part chopped and CNC welded on to the black FZ's rim on the left side. P.S. This whole procedure should be done only with a CNC Welding machine.
  • Rear Wheel - The only modd for the rear wheel is fixing a Rear disc brake onto the FZ (drum brake) wheel cast. The same method above for the front wheel is applied here too. The right side of the R15 wheel (that holds the disc) is chopped and CNC welded onto the new FZ rear wheel. If you dint notice, the silver part on the back rim is the original R15's part chopped and CNC welded on to the black FZ's rim on the left side.

FZ Swing Arm :
  • I dint have a photo to describe hence drew one. Fig A. is R15 swing arm. Fig B. is FZ Swing arm. Fig C. is the modified swing arm. The top part of the R15's is cut and welded on to the top part of the FZ. Likewise, the middle part of the FZ swing arm holding the spring is cut on either side to bring the upper ends closer.

Front Left Telescopic Shocks : (Front twin Disc Brake)
  • In order to hold the LHS Side Disc brake calliper, this modd is done.

Spring Placement :
  • The bottom end of the Sping is mounted on the Swing Arm, The top end is mounted onto a holder which is welded on the frame at this particular position as shown in figure. Red shows the Swing arm and the clamp that is welded onto the frame. Blue is the Spring shock absorber.

    1. it is possible, you just have to bend our existing frame and make few changes to it . you need a good welder to help you with fixing new clamp points.

    1. hi,
well.. i wud suggest u to actually buy the rim of any superbike.. that would be the best..
or if u dont wana do that.. u could just get another Rim for FZ chop the disc off and cnc weld it to urs.. u need to change only one fork to hold the other disk.. or u cud probably weld that too like how i did mine.
cnc welding is kinda costly..cos of its precision.. n i guess very few shops have that machine.
to weld a rim with another disc costs abt 3 k.. and a rim costs only 4 k
      so.....
      a superbike's rim costs about 6k.
so.. u decide what suits ur need betr.
      cheers :P

    1. Hi, sorry for the late reply,
My rim is also of Fz-16, please read above, its kinda simple, get another rim and CNC weld the portion that holds the disc on to ur current rim.
the fork is the same fork agin. get the thing welded on to the fork as well.
The thing abt CNC welding is, its damn strong and perfect,

  20. Ya cool mod dude. I have R15 V2and I like to mod my twin disc like urs. How much it costs for r15 v2? Can u email me more details of modding?? Here is my id: Love4ever.026gmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  21. u can manage to get a rim from scrap yard for abt 600 rs.

CNC welding will come to about 2000 for both rim and the fork. so.. approx .. about 3000rs

  22. Yes it is possible,
It is almost a direct fit,
u have to buy a new swing arm, new disc, new calliper, new rim, new axle, and u have to make a little modification to the upper end of the Shocks. u have to actually get it fixed a lil lower than the current holder position. so that the height of the bike will increase and it ll prevent the swing arm to hit the lower base of the tail frame.

so bottom line , the entire rear portion of the wheel + swing arm is what u ll have to buy.

  24. i want to fix 180/60r17 rear tyre in my yamaha r15v2 will u plz help me

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi,
If you are planning not to change the existing Rear Rim, then i would suggest you to fix a 160/60/17. 180 will just not fit cos of the swing arm.

If you want to fix 180, you will have to change the swing arm and the rim.

Find out what is the tyre radius of Duke 200. that tyre looks wider. If its 17, then its a direct fit.

  26. Hey bro I had Yamaha r15 v.2 and rear Tyre is almost damaged so I m planing to buy a new Tyre . But I want t fit the tyre of fazer size 140.65 .17 and the existing Tyre size is 130.70.17...so is it possible to fit in existing rim bcoz I do not have spair money to buy a new rim

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi,
The rim size of both the rims are 17.. so its a yes, you can fix that tyre.
But if u want ur tyre to look broader(if thats your intention) u have to go for 140 -(70)17..
If you fix 65.. u wont find any difference..n im pretty sure FZ's tyre is 140-60-17 n not 65.. so just recheck..
so bottom line.. buy 140-70-17, if not.. 140-65-17 is fine.

  27. what will it cost for changing swingarm as well as rim for a really fat rear tyre in r15v2 ? and what should i do with the front tyre? do i also have to change something there? what is the total cost of doing all this?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi,
The only way is to change the Rim,its gonna cost a lot,

best is buy a 150 / 60/17 tyre, that ll look fat for the rear tyre
and for the front.. just change the tyre to a fater one, it ll look good

If u looking at changeing sing arm + rim,, buy R6 swing arm + wheel rim + shocks+ sprocket.
it ll be around 14k from yamaha
